Nova #15

Nova #15

Nova #15 keeps the punches coming and does not fail to live up to its high standard. If it were not for the ending to Annihilation Conquest I would seriously question whether Abnett and Lanning could write a bad story. Yes, I didn’t like the whole Ultron leading the Phalanx plot, but that was my opinion and there are others who enjoyed. Either way these two have churned out another exciting edition and a very good ending to the current arc within the ongoing Nova series. With the team of writers on this series and the rotating artist I doubt this will be a title taken off my must read list. If it isn’t on yours then I suggest you put it there.

Nova #15

So if last month’s issue featuring Galactus and Silver Surfer wasn’t enough for you and you just craved some more of the Big G, then you will love this issue. Right from the start Abnett and Lanning use this excellent opportunity to delve into the feeding process of the mighty Galactus. The artwork is amazing and clearly conveys the writing and brings to life the whole process that is the destruction of a world at the hands of Galactus. The artwork on Galactus alone is some of the best I have ever seen. The magnitude of his size and his mere presence is conveyed in ways I have never seen it before and definitely makes me respect the Big G a lot more.

I loved the use of the Infinity symbol as the final process before Galactus actually devours the world’s energy. I don’t know if this is supposed to have meaning, but it was interesting. Great art and that was just the art depicting Galactus’ feeding frenzy. The art depicting Nova’s hurried and frantic escape from this frenzy is even better. You definitely feel the hysteria of the situation. Richard manages to use the siphons that Galactus uses to convert the planet’s energy as a means to stowaway aboard Galactus’ vessel, losing Worldmind in the process. Whether he actually has lost Worldmind permanently or not remains to be seen, but it is definitely an interesting dynamic Abnett and Lanning have introduced. We have seen Nova interact and carry on his duties with this symbiotic relationship with the Worldmind for 15 issues and now it comes to an abrupt halt or end.

Aboard Galactus’ vessel Nova is informed via a bio read out that the life form he was trying to save the planet’s inhabitants from, Harrow, has been stowing away on Galactus’ vessel since Galactus’ birth. Harrow has been around as long as the Big G and using his world eating as a means to serve his own fancy and has been doing so without Galactus’ knowledge. Richard is dead set on bringing this heresy to light though. Silver Surfer removes the shielding that has allowed Harrow to remain undetected and the Big G becomes enlightened and does take kindly to the situation. He incinerates Harrow.

Richard scared to death that he is next is teleported 5 light years away from Galactus’ vessel with the Silver Surfer who informs him once more that he does not wish to see him again. This new Silver Surfer attitude is something I really want to see more of in the comics. Can we get a new Silver Surfer ongoing series while he is the Herald? I mean the double issue of him and Galactus fighting Tenebrous and Aegis was great, an ongoing of Surfer would be greater. I know that would take a really good team of writers like Abnett and Lanning to present, but can we at least get it?

Richard still without Worldmind is now looking for his next adventure and all paths lead to Secret Invasion as you will see tomorrow with Guardians of the Galaxy as well. I really do feel like Abnett and Lanning can do no wrong by this character, they took a relative unknown in the Marvel Universe and allowed him to shne through great stories and interaction. As his series alone stands it proves that he is not just the hype because of the success of the Annihilation series. This comic has it's own two legs to stand on and they are firm in my opinion.

Nova #15

Usually, I have a hard time of trying to present the material to you guys because I don’t know what is the best issue out? But this week it almost fell into place. Secret Invasion is definitely this week’s hit, Nova fell in line with that and then Guardians of the Galaxy did as well, Eternals #2 wasn’t what I was expecting and hardly lived up to the billing I wanted, but it was a great segue into DC titles this week. So look to the horizon and stick around this week it’s going to be a doozy!
