JSA #21 reeled off out of nowhere because to be honest you feel a little out of the woods with the story after the pass couple of issues that have dragged this story on for so long, so much filler that has focused so little on the main story and instead on character development. Sandman finally wakes up from his sleep and details just what Gog has done, and what evil he brings. He has formed a parasitic bond with the Earth and if he leaves he will destroy the Earth, he seems content to stay so long as everyone kneels and worships Gog, well our heroes are not the kneeling type, especially in the face of false gods. They rally to fight Gog and those from among the ranks who have been following Gog, until Magog is forced to see the truth that is Gog as he takes away all that has been given to the heroes. Starman’s insanity, Atom’s face, and more are returned to them in kind for their disobedience, but the worst is the death of Magog aka Lance. There is more afoot as well in this issue as Jay Garrick is definitely doing more than riding the lightning here, he is literally being transformed into lightning by Gog. I am not sure how this is going to play out with the speed force, but lets find out together is issue #22.

Kingdom Come Special Superman #1 was a great read that gave us the back story to the displaced Superman and how his world fell apart and how he lost his Lois Lane. This is a more intimate story than Magog was and the thing that really brings it to life is the fantastic artwork of Alex Ross. His visuals are so dynamic and engaging that in its moments of lull where you look at Superman simply having discussions with characters like Lois Lane and Norman McKay you feel in the story as if you are really seeing the story unfold over the shoulders of the character. If not that Alex Ross laid out such great artwork he doubled-up on duties and laid out a great story and you have to love that. Alex Ross’ love of the Golden Age characters and their stories is clear in this and many other stories he tells and you really ought to love it. This should be a collector’s edition for any Alex Ross fan. I am holding it tight to the chest in the event that I attend a Comic Con or some other venue and have the chance to meet him and get his John Hancock.

In between JSA #20 and JSA #21 were two specials under the Kingdom Come banner and one was clearly better than the other. Kingdom Come Special Magog #1 gave Tomasi a lot of room to work with as far as what he could do with the origins of this character. Remember the roster on the JSA has grown quite large and the writers have been trying to evolve each character and give the reader a picture of them all, but we have yet to spend time with the Marine who became Magog. Well this is his origin story, but other than playing Rambo or G.I. Joe with some of the other heroes who chose to follow Magog this issue just falls flat on all fronts. The best part was the origin story of Thom Kallor which brought plenty of pieces of comics from everywhere, Legion of Three Worlds, Crisis and more are laid out in these last pages of Magog #1. All this is not enough for me to really enjoy the read, but hey I scanned it still.

Today you guys get your Holiday treat. I am going to give you five reviews that I know you probably have been wanting, but I have not found the time to get around to. I’m going to catch you up on the Justice Society of America series with the two Kingdom Come Special’s Magog and Superman. Let’s start off with where the roads lead with Justice Society of America #20. Keep in mind that this all seemed like filler for the Gog main story that was going on, you know holiday filler! This is the Power Girl resolution and there really is nothing resolved save that both Power Girls are really Power Girl. I was hoping and expecting for so much more, especially since Gog put Power Girl on Earth-2. The really big parts that come as kudos to readers and fans of the JSA or even the Silver/Golden Age is the family meetings between Mr. Terrific and his wife, Alan Scott and his daughter Jade and Obsidian’s nod back to his former self. Leave it to Thom Kallor a.k.a. Starman to fix the situation and realize hey I can help this situation and fix it. The story was filler and if you love that then it was a great read. Check it out!

Justice Society of America is definitely one of the DC series that excels above the rest and has definitely been a pleasure reading with Alex Ross’ creation Gog thrown into the mix. It is amazing to me how the series has remained outside of the Final Crisis event without so much as a tie-in or plot point here or there. I actually got a co-worker into reading the series and while she wasn’t into some of the Marvel titles that I presented to her she definitely liked the appeal of the artwork and the storyline that has been hallmarks of the Justice Society of America (Alex Ross and Co.) and the Justice League of America (Benes and Co.). Since I am a little behind with my reviews you will get a Double Feature in Justice Society of America #18 and Justice Society of America #19.
This is pretty much the climax point for the In Gog, We trust story arc which has been riveting. Every issue we kept waiting to see when Gog would go evil and he really hasn’t. it depends on how you view the whole Power Girl situation, whether he did it to her on purpose or not? As in Justice Society of America #18 he really does appear to be a beacon of good. JSA #18 is where everything begins to happen as the divide between those who believe in Gog and those who don’t begin to boil and the chapter in history that Superman spoke of becomes a reality, the appearance of Magog!
Power Girl is on the run in the parallel Earth and makes contact with a religiously devout version of Mr. Terrific trying to find a way back in JSA #19, while the Mr. Terrific she knows is being lectured by Starman about why having his sanity is not such a good thing. Meanwhile Superman confronts a very thankful Lance/Magog about his new powers which are on par with Superman’s. The feuding between the believers and non-believers of the JSA erupts as the team begins to breakdown and battle itself. Meanwhile, Power Girl returns through a portal opened up in Starman accompanied by the Justice Society Infinity hot on her heels. Its going to be a slugfest showdown in JSA #20 and the question is whose coming out on top? Or will Gog choose to stop the infighting and continue his march to make the world a better place? Another question is why is Black Adam being given signs to head in the direction of Magog?
This also happens to be a SIGHTINGS issue which means certain things within will have rippling effects into the upcoming year in the DCU. Don't forget the Marvel TCG expansion, Marvel Evolutions will be out in November so check your local hobby shops and order.
